Video Poker History

Video poker history began with the arrival of electronic slots in 1975 when the Fortune Coin Company introduced the first video slot machine in Las Vegas. The new machine received only mild acceptance by the casinos, they installed it on the casino floor primarily as a novelty.

Only after the new invention was converted to a draw poker machine did it's potential become apparent. In 1976, Bally Manufacturing launched a black and white video poker machine and less than a year later, the Fortune Coin Company competed with a color version. The new game rapidly gained in popularity after that.

The video poker evolution began in 1975 in the casinos of Las Vegas and today video poker machines are featured in practically all online and land-based casinos around the world. This would not have been possible before invention of the computer chip.

The game is a close relative of the regular game of poker and is derived from a combination of slot machines and five-card draw poker, thus combining the aspects of skill and luck.

The major differences between regular poker and video poker is that you are playing against a machine rather than real people, and your goal is to achieve particular hands rather than beat opponents hands (as there are no other players).

The history of video poker is relatively short, but the game has become tremendously popular. This can be traced to several factors and characteristics. It's a fast game and it gives players the opportunity to make decisions, which can determine the results.

The term "video poker" refers to several similar games of poker played on machines. Each game has slightly different rules and payoffs, requiring different strategies for optimum results, but all are played in the same fashion.
